It is very useful to distinguish buffer columns from WIP columns, since buffers are clearly waste—the features in there are just sitting there waiting, right? The larger the buffer, the longer things take!
Think of your mailbox again. The longer you let stuff accumulate in there, the longer it takes for you to get around to reading any given letter. This translates into waste. You’ll need a bigger mailbox, your friends will be frustrated because it takes forever to get a response from you, and your bills won’t get paid on time.
Yet, sometimes we need a small buffer to ensure smooth flow between two processes. For example, the rate at which features get developed doesn’t always perfectly match the rate at which features get system-tested. This type of buffering can be seen as a “necessary waste.”
